Former Tory MP Edwina Currie gave a colourful insight into the world of politics at a ladies’ lunch which raised almost £3,000 for the Surrey Air Ambulance.

The writer and broadcaster, who lives in Nutfield, gave a speech to more than 40 guests at The William Bray pub and restaurant in Shere last week (June 9).

She shared her memories and anecdotes from her time in Westminster, covering a range of topics from what to wear in Parliament to constituency advice bureaus.

The former junior Health Minister has previously helped to raise more than £100,000 for the Surrey Air Ambulance through its Air Aid balls at Redhill Aerodrome and Nutfield.

The life-saving charity needs £1.7m-a-year to keep the helicopter airborne and each flying mission alone costs between £1,500 and £2,000.

Edwina said: “I’m delighted to be able to support the Surrey Air Ambulance. I live in the countryside and close to the motorways so I know important it is.

“My heart is in my mouth when I see it circling, I just hope that whoever they are picking up they get to in time.”

Surrey County Fundraiser Julie Jenkinson thanked Edwina, sponsors TWM Solicitors and Quin-essence and The William Bray owner Julian Bailey for making the ladies’ lunch “such a success”.
