Two Surrey lads have made their New Year resolution already - 'to do something positive for Surrey'. The 22 year olds from Walton on Thames and Weybridge will climb Mount Kilimanjaro, in Eastern Africa, the tallest free-standing mountain in the world and raise £2000 (two thousand pounds) - enough money to help the Surrey Air Ambulance carry out a life saving mission.

Luke Rendell and Dave Smith, both musicians, will leave the UK on January 8th to start their 19,340 feet (5,895 metre) climb two days later. They're scheduled to reach the summit on 14th January. The pair, who have been best friends since primary school, started their training for the epic challenge in late August and have been running, swimming and walking to build stamina and strengthen their leg muscles. Some walks have included carrying a 10kg bag of cement in their backpacks over Boxhill on the North Downs for resistance training.

Luke Rendell said: "We're really looking forward to the challenge, we've been putting in the training, so we're confident we can do it. We've also managed to raise three quarters of our target so that's really fantastic. It's been fun raising the money, especially our intimate gig at Ruby's in Walton on Thames - we had great support that night. We've chosen to raise funds for the Surrey Air Ambulance as it's something that really benefits the whole of our county, it is an amazing service. I've seen the helicopter in action when the medical team helped a man who'd been knocked of his bicycle - they worked really fast to save him."

Dave Smith said: "We had no idea that the Surrey Air Ambulance was a charity that got little funding from the government. We hope that our contribution will go someway to make a difference. Meeting the medical crew on our visit to Dunsfold really confirmed in our minds that we've chosen the right charity to support. The work the charity does is truly inspiring, and anyone of us might need the medical intervention the Surrey Air Ambulance carries out one day."

Julie Jenkinson, Surrey County Fundraiser said: "It's amazing to think that Luke and Dave will climb a mountain with us in mind. It's truly inspirational that these two guys aim to raise enough money to enable us to carry out a life saving mission. It is a huge amount of effort but with such a fabulous reason - the pair are great ambassadors for Surrey - we're grateful for the support."
